kids&welcome möchten, dass der Weihnachtsmann zu allen Kindern und ihren Eltern, unabhängig von Religion und Herkunft, kommt und sich somit niemand aus der allgemeinen Weihnachtsfreude ausgeschlossen fühlt. Und hier kommt ihr ins Spiel! Ihr packt altersgerechte Geschenktüten, die alle einheitlich und auf die Bedürfnisse von geflüchteten Kindern und ihren Eltern in Unterkünften angepasst sind. Warum ist das wichtig?

„2019 hatte ich meine erste Verteilung in der Unterkunft am Ankerzentrum Bargkoppelstieg. Es fiel mir schwer mir vorzustellen, dass an diesem Ort, an dem Abschiebungen vorgenommen werden und die Menschen teilweise zu acht in Räumen schlafen mussten, so etwas wie Weihnachtsstimmung aufkommen sollte. Mit mir waren die Ehrenamtlichen des Unterkunftsbetreibers und mein Kollege Henok aus Eritrea, der spontan zum Weihnachtsmann erklärt wurde. Zu meiner Überraschung war Henok das Konzept „Weihnachtsmann“ unbekannt. Trotzdem warf er sich mutig das Kostüm und den etwas muffeligen Bart über und marschierte Richtung Weihnachtsfeier, um irgendetwas zu improvisieren. Per Mikro rief er die Namen der Kinder auf, die schüchtern nach vorne kamen und ihr Geschenk entgegennahmen. Für mich überraschend erlangte Henok sofort Rockstarstatus und musste bei jeder Familie mit aufs Selfie. Den Teenagern war die Veranstaltung zu uncool, aber nach der Verteilung kam ein 17jähriger zu mir und fragte schüchtern, ob es auch was für ihn gäbe. Und ja, das gab es, sogar etwas Besonderes: wir hatten Pflegesets für Männer mit einem Kopfhörer. Begeistert nahm er seine Tüte in Empfang, sagte allen Kumpels Bescheid und so konnten wir auch diese Tüten verteilen. Im Anschluss gab es zu Weihnachtsmusik eine kleine Feier mit Buffet und als ich die glücklichen Kinder und ihre entspannten Eltern sah und das Gefühl allgemeiner Zufriedenheit auf mich wirken lassen konnte, musste ich zugeben, dass, entgegen meinen Befürchtungen, gerade in dieser traurigen Unterkunft so etwas wie Besinnlichkeit aufgekommen war."

kids&welcome want Father Christmas to visit all children and their parents, regardless of their religion or background, so that no one feels excluded from the general Christmas cheer. And this is where you come in! You’ll be putting together age-appropriate gift bags, all of which are standardised and tailored to the needs of refugee children and their parents in accommodation centres. Why is this important?

“In 2019, I took part in my first distribution at the Bargkoppelstieg Ankerzentrum accommodation centre. I found it hard to imagine that in this place, where deportations take place and people sometimes have to sleep eight to a room, there could be any sort of Christmas spirit. With me were the volunteers from the accommodation provider and my colleague Henok from Eritrea, who was spontaneously declared to be Father Christmas. To my surprise, Henok was unfamiliar with the concept of ‘Father Christmas’. Nevertheless, he bravely donned the costume and the slightly musty beard and marched off towards the Christmas party to improvise something. Using a microphone, he called out the names of the children, who shyly came forward to receive their presents. To my surprise, Henok immediately achieved rock star status and had to pose for a selfie with every family. The teenagers thought the event was too uncool, but after the presents had been handed out, a 17-year-old came up to me and asked shyly if there was anything for him too. And yes, there was – something special, in fact. We had care sets for men, each containing a pair of headphones. He was delighted to receive his bag, told all his mates about it, and so we were able to hand out the rest of the bags too. Afterwards, there was a small celebration with a buffet accompanied by Christmas music, and as I watched the happy children and their relaxed parents and let the feeling of general contentment wash over me, I had to admit that, contrary to my fears, a sense of contemplation had indeed taken hold, particularly in this sad accommodation."
